Obesity and the Acai Berry Diet
It’s not a secret – many of us have a weight problem.
In fact, there are over 190 million Americans who are overweight with a BMI of 25 or higher, or are obese with a BMI of 30 or higher, or even morbidly obese with a BMI of 35 or higher. This means that about 2/3 of the whole American population carries too much weight. Thus, it’s also not surprising that the same number of people admit they would like to lose weight.
The concept of obesity is more than just the number you see on the scale, or the size of the clothes you wear. It’s an ongoing health problem that has been connected to several health conditions. These include Type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, hypertension or high blood pressure, joint problems, respiratory conditions, pancreatic, liver and gallbladder diseases, and even infertility as well as some types of cancers. Because of this, many have looked at quick and painless solutions to lose weight and live healthily again. Responding to this demand are super foods that are known as excellent sources of vitamins and minerals, and are said to have resulted in drastic weight loss for many. Super foods are types of food that are believed to reduce the risk of developing heart disease, the accumulation of cholesterol, as well as the progression of some cancers. On top of these, they are also known to supply the body with the sufficient nutrients that would have been received from different food sources. Also, these are known to boost the mood as taken. One of these super foods, which unsurprisingly have also launched a program of its own – is the acai berry diet. It revolves around one super food, the acai berry that comes from acai palm trees in both Central and South America.
The acai berry is densely packed not only with antioxidants but also with amino acids and essential fatty acids. Some studies show that the fruit itself may contain 10 times more antioxidants compared to red grapes and also, as much as 30 times more flavonoids compared to red wine. Having a well-balanced and nutritious diet consist of lean meats, green leafy vegetables, fruits and slow-metabolizing carbohydrates in conjunction with daily exercise, are essential to weight loss. While you may be unable to find this quick-spoiling berry in the grocery store, these can be found in the farmers market. The berries come as whole fruits, or can be purchased in juice or pulp form, and powdered – which can be added to smoothies, shakes and baked goods. The popularity of the acai berry diet has grown so much that in the year 2008 alone, almost $15 million worth of acai berry products – from food items to skin care regimen.
Although the acai berry diet is a known and tested regimen, not all products are created equal. Acai berry ice cream could do more harm than good, as well as other baked goods that claim to have the super food. As such, the acai berry diet is a strict regimen that needs to be followed to be effective.
With the acai berry diet, the fruit itself can be a healthy inclusion to a nutritional diet, similar to other antioxidant-rich foods such as dark chocolate (with at least 60% cocoa content), oranges, tomatoes and blueberries. Because of this, many have turned to the acai berry diet as a weapon to combat obesity in the long run.
